13 April 2010

A quick visit to the lake this morning due to a early appointment at the dreaded dentist, got down there at 06.30 til 08.40, weather was dry, sunny and cool with a slight ground frost in places, very little breeze of note.

As I entered the park area the first bird I heard was a Chiffchaff, in total I had five during the visit. Nearby the first of two Willow Warblers was also singing away. On the model boating lake were 3x Tufted Duck and 2x Great Crested Grebes.
On the grass verge in front of the main lake 3x Little Ringed Plovers where running around until spooked by a dog walker and flying off south. On the main lake 16x Tufted Duck, another 9x Great Crested Grebes and 16x Mute Swans, the highest count of the month. A Grey Heron also flew over calling away.
Towards the wood/pools area and the first of 4x Blackcap singing by the old railway sidings, a pair of Teal are still on the middle pool and the Reed Bunting on the top pool, where the Mute Swan continues too sit on her nest in the middle of the reeds.
On the old gas works the only birds of note were 3x Stock Doves on the pylons.

In total only 34 species were seen, but I did kind of rush around.

At 08.30 Nick Smith had a Peregrine fly through.
