12 August 2010

I bottled out of a long walk around Westport this morning due to the heavy rain, the dog and myself were soaked by the time we reached the main lake and not having waterproofs on I decided enough was enough, I did a quick scan of the main lake and other than a couple of Shoveler didn't notice anything else.

Nick Smith is made of stronger stuff than me (ie he had a raincoat) so he had a bit more to record, 2 female 'type' Ruddy Ducks is the 1st record since May, now I know people say you shouldn't report these because DEFRA will come along and shot them and if they were either breeding here or a resident then I would agree and say nothing but I really don't think DEFRA are interested in 2 records for the entire year, anyway rant over Nick also recorded, 3 Teal, 5 Shoveler and a single Common Sandpiper.

  1. Advice time for all you young birdwatchers out there - I have a spare coat in my boot for occasions like this morning. One coat to get soaked then a dry one to put on after.
